A river cruise gets you to the markets along the river. But some of Europe's best Christmas markets are in cities the rivers don't reach — and a pre- or post-cruise hotel extension is how you see them.
Prague (before a Danube cruise)
Prague's Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets are among Europe's most beautiful, and no river cruise reaches Prague by ship. A 2-night pre-cruise extension (the cruise line buses you from Prague to Nuremberg for embarkation) is the standard add-on for a Danube Christmas cruise. Take it.
Paris (before/after a Seine cruise)
Most Seine cruises start and end in Paris, but an extra hotel night or two gives you time for the Champs-Élysées market, the Tuileries, and the Eiffel Tower sparkle. Stay in the 1st or 7th arrondissement to be walkable to the markets.
Lucerne (after a Rhine cruise)
A Rhine cruise ending in Basel is a 90-minute train from Lucerne, whose lakeside Christmas market (against the Alpine backdrop) is one of Switzerland's best. A 2-night Lucerne extension is the classic Rhine add-on.
Salzburg (after a Danube cruise)
Salzburg's baroque squares host beautiful markets, and the city is a short train from Linz (a common Danube stop). A 2-night Salzburg extension adds Mozart's city and the 'Silent Night' chapel at Oberndorf.
Tip
Book extensions through the cruise line for simplicity — they handle transfers, luggage, and hotels. If you're comfortable traveling independently, you can book the same hotels for less and train between cities.
