December in Europe is cold, damp, and magical. Here's the layer-by-layer packing list for a market cruise.

European Christmas markets run late November through December, and the weather is reliably cold (30–45°F / -1–7°C) and often damp. The secret to enjoying them is layers — you'll be in and out of markets all day, and the wrong gear will end your evening early.

The layer system

  • Base layer: merino wool or synthetic long-sleeve top + leggings
  • Mid layer: a fleece or lightweight down sweater
  • Outer layer: a waterproof, windproof shell with a hood
  • Bottom: insulated, water-resistant pants (not jeans — they soak through)

Footwear (the most important thing)

Markets are cobblestone, often wet, and you'll be on your feet for hours. Bring waterproof, broken-in walking shoes or boots with good tread. Pack wool socks (they stay warm when damp). Leave the heels at home.

Accessories

  • Warm hat that covers your ears
  • Touchscreen-compatible gloves (you'll be photographing constantly)
  • A lightweight scarf you can layer — markets sell beautiful ones if you forget
  • Small crossbody bag for market purchases
  • Reusable shopping bag for crafts

For the ship

River ships are smart-casual. Bring one nice outfit for the captain's dinner (a sport coat for men, a dress or nice slacks for women — no formal wear required). The rest is casual: sweaters, slacks, comfortable shoes. Most ships have a small gym and a hair dryer in every cabin.

Tip

Leave room in your suitcase. You will buy ornaments, Lebkuchen, and wine. Every traveler does.
