Spain
Salamanca, a UNESCO university city of golden sandstone, hosts a Christmas market in its Plaza Mayor en route up the Douro from Porto.
Famous for
Spain's golden university city — sandstone cathedrals and a plaza market just off the river.
Salamanca is the Spanish stop on Douro itineraries that cross the border — a UNESCO old town of golden Villamayor sandstone, home to Spain's oldest university (founded 1218) and two cathedrals side by side (one Romanesque, one Gothic). The Plaza Mayor, one of Spain's most beautiful squares, hosts the Christmas market. The local specialty is cochinillo (roast suckling pig), and the wine is Ribera del Duero — the same grape that becomes port downstream. Salamanca appears on Douro sailings that extend into Spain via the canal.
Dates: Early Dec – early Jan
Vibe: Golden and monumental — Spain's oldest university dressed for Christmas.
Local tip
Find the frog carved into the university façade — local legend says students who spot it on their first try will pass their exams.
