Portugal
Porto's Ribeira district, a UNESCO riverfront of tiled houses, hosts Portugal's coziest Christmas market among the port-wine lodges.
Famous for
The Ribeira market and port-wine lodges — the warmest, least-crowded Christmas river port.
Porto is the Douro's gateway and Portugal's most atmospheric city — a UNESCO riverfront of azulejo-tiled houses climbing the steep north bank of the Douro. Its Christmas market spreads along the Ribeira and into the Avenida dos Aliados, with roasted chestnuts (castanhas assadas), vinho quente (Portuguese glühwein), and fado music in the air. The port-wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river, run special tastings through December. Most Douro sailings start or end here, with an overnight to explore.
Dates: Early Dec – early Jan
Vibe: Warm and tiled — azulejo-lined riverbanks and port-wine lodges.
Local tip
Do a port-wine tasting at Graham's Lodge in Gaia — the terrace view over Porto at dusk is one of the best in Europe.
