Germany
Bernkastel-Kues' medieval Marktplatz, framed by half-timbered houses, hosts a romantic Advent market in the heart of Moselle Riesling country.
Famous for
The 'Bear Castle' and a perfectly preserved medieval wine square — Riesling country at its purest.
Bernkastel-Kues is the Moselle's quintessential wine town — a perfectly preserved medieval Marktplatz lined with half-timbered houses, including the pointed 1416 Spitzhäuschen. The Advent market fills the square on Advent weekends, and the Riesling here is legendary — the Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard above town produces one of Germany's most famous (and expensive) wines. The story goes that a 14th-century archbishop was cured of illness by the wine, hence 'Doctor.' Bernkastel appears on Rhine & Moselle combination sailings.
Dates: Advent weekends
Vibe: Medieval and Riesling-soaked — a single perfect market square.
Local tip
Try the Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling in a wine cellar — even a glass is a bucket-list wine experience.
