Switzerland
Basel, the eastern anchor of Rhine sailings, hosts two of Switzerland's grandest Christmas markets in its medieval old town.
Famous for
Switzerland's most beautiful Christmas city — two grand markets in a medieval old town.
Basel is the eastern start (or end) of most Rhine Christmas sailings, and the city considers itself Switzerland's Christmas capital. Two grand markets — Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz (before the red-sandstone cathedral) — fill the medieval old town. The local specialty is Basler Läckerli, a spiced honey biscuit with candied peel and nuts. From Basel, you can add a 2-night extension to Lucerne and the Alpine Christmas markets. The Rhine becomes unnavigable upstream of Basel, so this is the river's terminus.
Dates: Late Nov – Dec 23
Vibe: Refined and Swiss — medieval squares with a polished, Alpine feel.
Local tip
Buy Läckerli at the Läckerli-Huus — it's the original bakery and ships worldwide if you want more later.
