Viking and AMA Waterways are the two lines we push hardest for Christmas-market cruises, and travelers ask us to compare them more than any other pair. They're priced similarly, sail the same rivers, and both run excellent Christmas itineraries — but they have genuinely different personalities and inclusions.
The short version
Viking is the thinking person's cruise: consistent, culture-forward, with an included excursion in every port and a resident historian. AMA is the food-and-wine lover's cruise: a daily Sip & Sail cocktail hour, all-day drinks, and a chef's table restaurant included — more generous, more social.
Inclusions
This is the biggest difference. AMA includes wine, beer, and cocktails throughout the day, plus a pre-dinner Sip & Sail cocktail hour every evening. Viking includes beer and wine only at lunch and dinner — drinks outside meal times cost extra. Both include one excursion per port (AMA offers some premium excursions for a fee; Viking's are more uniformly included).
- AMA: all-day drinks + Sip & Sail + Chef's Table restaurant
- Viking: beer & wine at meals only + Culture Curriculum + resident historian
- Both: Wi-Fi, bikes, one excursion per port
Ships
Viking's Longships are identical across the fleet — same layout, same Scandinavian design, same cabins. You always know what you're getting. AMA's ships vary more, but the standout is the AmaMagna on the Danube: nearly double the width of a standard river ship, with four dining venues, a cinema, and a heated pool.
Food
AMA wins on dining — the included Chef's Table restaurant (a tasting menu with wine pairing) is a genuine differentiator, and there are multiple dining venues. Viking's food is consistently good but more uniform; the Aquavit Terrace turns into a winter lounge at Christmas.
Vibe
Viking is quieter, more culture-focused, and strictly adults-only (no one under 18). AMA is warmer, more social, and welcomes multi-generational groups — there are often families on board, especially over the holidays.
Price
AMA's base fare is typically $200–$400 higher per person than Viking for a comparable sailing — but once you factor in the drinks package (which would cost extra on Viking), AMA is often the better value. Both are mid-tier on price; neither is the cheapest nor the most expensive.
Tip
Choose Viking if you want culture, consistency, and a quiet, adult atmosphere. Choose AMA if you want the most generous drinks package, the best onboard dining, and a more social vibe. Both are excellent — you can't go wrong with either.
