The Douro is the warmest of the Christmas-market rivers, and the least crowded. Sailings run Porto to Pinhão (and into Spain to Salamanca), threading terraced port-wine estates. Christmas here is about port wine, fado music, and roasted chestnuts rather than glühwein.
The markets
- Porto — Ribeira district, Avenida dos Aliados, castanhas assadas (roasted chestnuts)
- Salamanca — Plaza Mayor (golden sandstone), Spain's oldest university
The port wine
The Douro is port-wine country — the terraced vineyards along the river supply the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia (across from Porto). Most sailings include a tasting at a quinta (wine estate) and a tour of a Gaia lodge. The local festive drink is a glass of tawny port, slightly warmed.
When to go
December is mild (50–60°F / 10–15°C) — the warmest of any Christmas river. The markets are smaller and less crowded than the German rivers, making this a great choice for travelers who want a quieter, warmer, more Iberian Christmas.
Tip
If you love port wine, book a sailing that includes a tasting at Quinta do Bomfim or Quinta de la Rosa — these are working vineyards, not just tourist stops.
